How to fit the cables and the card (Raspberry Pi 5)

Your two cables for an Acorn on a Raspberry Pi 5 have passed the bench check, and you are fitting them and the card.

The card goes in the M.2 slot of the HAT, marked here:

The M.2 HAT from above, with its M.2 slot marked

The M.2 HAT from above, with its M.2 slot marked

The housings go on the HAT’s 40-pin header, marked here with its pin 1. With the stacking header fitted, they go on the pins that come up through the HAT at these places:

The M.2 HAT from above, with its 40-pin header and pin 1 marked

This procedure is waiting for its bench run: issue #218.

Steps

1. Fit the plugs into the card. The sockets are on the underside of the card and may not be reachable once it is in the slot. So the plugs go in first, in this order. After action 1, touch bare metal of the host before you pick up the card, and hold it by its edges.

  1. Power off the Raspberry Pi 5: unplug its power, and its network cable if it is powered over PoE.

  2. If the housings are on the headers (after the bench check), take them off.

  3. Press the P1 plug into socket P1 and the P2 plug into socket P2 on the underside of the Acorn. Each goes the way round it was when you put the flags on. Press each until fully seated.

2. Fit the card, then the housings, in this order. The screw of action 4 is the one Waveshare’s page for the HAT lists.

  1. Put the Acorn in the M.2 slot. Fit its screw, in the standoff marked 2280 at the far end of the Waveshare PoE M.2 HAT+ (B). The screw is the SSD mounting screw the HAT ships with.

  2. The Waveshare PoE M.2 HAT+ (B) is on the Raspberry Pi 5, with its stacking header fitted. Each housing goes on the pins that come up through the HAT. Fit the P1 housing on the 40-pin header pins 19 to 26, marked corner on pin 19. Fit the P2 housing on the 40-pin header pins 5 to 10, marked corner on pin 5.

  3. Before powering on, look at both housings again, as on the bench check. The P1 housing’s marked corner is on pin 19 of the 40-pin header, and the P2 housing’s on pin 5 of the 40-pin header. Turned round, either housing puts its wires on the wrong pins. Fitted, the housings get only this look; the meter check was the bench check’s.

Check

Both housings sit on the pins action 5 names, each marked corner on its pin, as action 6 looks for before power.

If it fails

A housing is off its pins, or turned round: do not power on. Take it off and fit it again as action 5 says.
